Zeena Zahir resigns from BroadCom

Member of Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) Zeena Zahir has resigned from the commission amid a dismissal motion initiated against her at the Parliament of the Maldives.

Zeena’s resignation has come after the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions forwarded the dismissal motion against her to the parliament floor. The dismissal motion was initiated following an inquiry into accusations of taking part in political activities and enabling political influence to dictate her decisions as a member of BroadCom. The committee concluded Zeena had failed to carry out her legal responsibilities as a member of BroadCom.

In the resignation letter submitted to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Zeena said the dismissal motion initiated by the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions is biased and unfair. She described the accusations against her as baseless, stating she carried out her responsibilities in BroadCom with honesty and integrity.

The Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions has conducted numerous inquiries into members of BroadCom, with regards to their actions during the previous administration. Former BroadCom President Mohamed Shaheeb and members Ismail Sofwan and Hassan Nabah resigned from the commission after the parliament committee initiated a dismissal motion against them. Meanwhile, Fathimath Zaina was removed from the commission through a no-confidence vote at the Parliament.
