Economic Minister warns against politicising foreign investment

Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has warned against turning political differences into campaigns targeting foreign investors, urging opposition movements to stop spreading misinformation and intimidating those seeking to invest in the Maldives.

The Minister made the appeal in a social media post expressing concern over reports published by a news outlet. He stressed that political disagreements should not undermine investment opportunities that could benefit Maldivian citizens.

Minister Saeed called on opposition movements to stop targeting prospective investors, emphasising the importance of protecting the country's investment prospects and the opportunities they create for the public.

He warned that spreading false information and intimidating investors could benefit those seeking an unfair advantage in the competitive global business environment. Describing such misinformation as "music to their ears", he highlighted the potential consequences of campaigns targeting investment in the Maldives.

Addressing the country's economic landscape, Minister Saeed reaffirmed that tourism remains the backbone of the Maldivian economy, regardless of how difficult some may find that reality to accept.

He noted that the travel and tourism industry continues to evolve as global trends change, stressing that hatred, lies and jealousy cannot provide the foundation for a successful industry.

The Minister further addressed the country's legal framework, emphasising that Maldivian laws govern the nation and that no activities contrary to the Constitution would be permitted.

In this regard, he urged those spreading false reports and hostility to examine the facts rather than circulate misinformation and hatred.

The Government continues to prioritise increasing foreign investment in the Maldives, with several major investment projects currently under way. It is also working to introduce additional developments as part of these efforts.

Among these initiatives is the Sustainable Township Project under development in Noonu Atoll, alongside the Rasmalé project, which the Government is preparing to launch.

These large-scale developments have generated differing views and discussions among political groups and the public, with debate over the projects continuing.
