Public consultations have begun on 13 islands across the Maldives under the 15-megawatt (MW) solar package of the Accelerating Renewable Energy Integration and Sustainable Energy (ARISE) project.
The package includes solar power installations, upgrades and expansion of island electricity grids, and the establishment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy said the consultations aim to inform residents about the project’s objectives and explain the importance and benefits of solar power generation in the Maldives. The meetings also seek to clarify the mechanisms available for residents to raise concerns and submit complaints related to the project.
The latest consultations in the series were held in Funadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll, and Maabaidhoo and Kunahandhoo in Laamu Atoll.
Representatives from island councils and officials from utility service providers attended the meetings. Participants answered questions from residents and discussed feedback and suggestions concerning the project, as well as efforts to support the Maldives’ transition towards a cleaner, more environmentally friendly energy system.
