The government’s initiative to construct a new 50-bed hospital in Baa Atoll is expected to significantly enhance healthcare services across the region, according to Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim. He stated that the project is intended to address longstanding spatial constraints that have impeded the development of essential medical infrastructure.
Minister Nazim, in an interview with PSM News, identified the lack of physical space within the current hospital facility as the principal obstacle to strengthening healthcare provision in the atoll. He stated that the new hospital would enable the establishment of numerous services, marking a major advancement for the region’s health system.
“The president has resolved to implement a lasting solution to the spatial constraints currently affecting healthcare services in Baa Atoll. The new hospital is expected to enable the introduction of numerous additional services,” Minister Nazim stated. The new facility, he affirmed, will directly address these constraints and facilitate the introduction of critical services previously unattainable due to infrastructural limitations.
Responsibility for the construction has been awarded to the Road Development Corporation (RDC), with a mandated completion timeline of one and a half years. The formal agreement was signed during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing visit to the islands of Baa Atoll.
As work on the new facility progresses, Minister Nazim stated that efforts to expand services at the existing hospital continue. He noted that Baa Atoll Hospital has already introduced mammography services, becoming the first atoll-level institution, excluding regional hospitals, to offer this vital diagnostic tool. He said that this development is expected to eliminate the need for residents to travel to Malé and alleviate existing queues in the capital. The mammography service was officially inaugurated by President Muizzu.
