The government has signed an agreement with Thinadhoo City Council to hand over the drainage system established on the island. The agreement was signed by the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim and Mayor of the Council Saudhu Ali.
The works to establish and install a robust drainage system in Thinadhoo was carried out by the Ministry of Finance. The initiative aims to mitigate the challenges residents face due to flooding in the rainy seasons and to minimise the overall damage to the island in such incidents.
Speaking at the ceremony held to sign the agreement, Minister Thoriq observed that the persistent flooding issues faced by Thinadhoo were neglected and unresolved for a long period of time. The minister stressed that this causes several inconveniences and challenges to the residents of the island, pedestrians, students, and parents as well. Highlighting that the floods have resulted in significant damages to private property and households in various ways, he stated that the drainage system would play a pivotal role in combatting the issue. The minister further reiterated the government's commitment to resolving such issues sustainably.
