Sri Lanka and Maldives discuss strengthening economic cooperation

The newly appointed High Commissioner of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Maldives Pelpolage Ranga Sujeewa Goonawardena has presented his Letters of Credence to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The ceremony underscored the longstanding and robust diplomatic relations between the two nations.

High Commissioner Goonawardena was escorted to the President’s Office from the Republic Square in a traditional “Haiykolhu” cultural procession, accompanied by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Drum and Trumpet Band. This display of cultural heritage highlighted the importance of the occasion and the warm reception extended to the High Commissioner.

After presenting his credentials, High Commissioner Goonawardena was warmly received by President Muizzu. The two leaders engaged in fruitful discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in various sectors, including investment promotion and economic collaboration. Education and health were highlighted as key areas for strengthening bilateral ties. President Muizzu expressed a particular interest in seeking Sri Lanka’s support in recruiting qualified teachers to the Maldives, aiming to boost the educational sector further.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka were established on July 26, 1965. This enduring relationship has seen continuous growth and cooperation over the decades. High Commissioner Goonawardena’s appointment and the recent discussions signal a promising future for enhanced collaboration and mutual support.

The Maldives and Sri Lanka look forward to deepening their friendship and exploring new avenues of cooperation, reinforcing the strong bond that has been nurtured for nearly six decades.
