Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has said the Maldives and India share a close and longstanding friendship in a social media post marking India’s Independence Day.
In his post, Vice President Latheef extended sincere greetings and well wishes to the Government and people of India on the occasion of the country’s 80th Independence Day.
The Vice President said the Maldives and India have maintained a close and longstanding friendship. He also wished India continued peace, progress and prosperity in the years ahead.
India’s Independence Day is observed annually on 15 August. The day commemorates India gaining independence in August 1947, when British colonial rule came to an end.
Since the current Government assumed office, efforts have continued to strengthen relations between the Maldives and India. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has visited India, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also visited the Maldives.
Agreements beneficial to both countries have also been reached during these meetings.
