Gov't says attitude should change towards mental illness

Minister of Higher Education Ibrahim Hassan has said that society should change its attitude toward people with mental illnesses. He made the remarks while speaking at an event held at Central Park in Hulhumale’ to mark World Mental Health Day.

Speaking at the event, Minister Hassan said there are many people in the Maldives who need treatment for mental illnesses. He said that mental health services should be expanded and made available at affordable prices to the public. He also said that efforts to improve mental health are not the responsibility of individuals alone but also of society by allowing them to be involved in their community.

Also at the event, Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem noted most people prioritises physical health but that maintaining mental health is also important for their well-being. He said every person might have to deal with mental illness and that the public should be more aware of the issue. He also emphasised the importance of creating an understanding and caring community.

The World Mental Health Day event was held in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Health Protection Agency (HPA), and the Centre for Mental Health. the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Family, Gender and Social Services, government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and volunteer groups took part in the event.

World Mental Health Day is an international day for global mental health education, awareness, and advocacy against social stigma. This year's theme is ensuring mental health and well-being for all becomes a global priority.
