Japan extends grant to upgrade Mukurimagu School

The Government of Japan has extended a grant of USD79,300 for the upgrade of Mukurimagu School in Gan, Laamu Atoll.

The grant agreement was signed on March 7 by Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Takeuchi Midori and Principal of Mukurimagu School Abdulla Shareef. The grant is part the Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) of the Japanese government.

As part of the grant, two special classrooms will be built for kindergarten in Mukurimagu School. The grant will also be used to build an evacuation shelter in case of a natural disaster.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister of State for Education Dr. Abdulla Rasheed acknowledged the continuous assistance extended by Japan over the years to upgrade and develop the education sector of the Maldives. As such, he noted Japan has assisted infrastructure development of several schools in the atolls.

Japan has been assisting the development of the Maldivian education sector since 1996. Japan has also provided numerous grants for projects in the healthcare and environmental sectors.
