Maldives joins talks on small island priorities for COP31

Small island nations are discussing common priorities and strategies for the upcoming COP31 climate summit, with the Maldives participating in a meeting of climate change coordinators from the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) in Apia, Samoa.

The meeting aims to coordinate the positions of small island states in international climate negotiations and strengthen efforts to protect their interests as they face growing threats from climate change.

The Maldives is represented at the meeting by Aishath Aileen Niyaz and Thibyan Ibrahim, directors at the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy.

Discussions focus on identifying key issues for small island nations to champion at COP31, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to climate impacts and securing the financial and technical assistance needed to strengthen climate resilience.

The coordinators are also discussing strategies to enhance cooperation among island nations and develop practical approaches to building resilient and sustainable communities.

The Maldives has consistently advocated for the interests of small island developing states in international climate negotiations, particularly through AOSIS. The country continues to push for greater access to climate finance and technical assistance to help vulnerable island nations address the impacts of climate change.

COP31 will be held in Türkiye from 9 to 20 November 2026.
