Scientists reveal deep-sea ecosystem data from Maldives expedition

A public symposium convened in the Maldives to present comprehensive scientific findings and environmental data retrieved from extensive surveys of the nation’s deep-sea ecosystems.

Dr Mahamood Shougee, Chancellor of the Maldives National University, officiated the opening proceedings at the institution’s Business School Auditorium. The assembly detailed the outcomes of the 'Nekton First Descent: Maldives' programme, a collaborative research enterprise involving the university, the Maldives Marine Research Institute, and the United Kingdom-based Nekton Foundation.

Executed across six Maldivian atolls during September and October 2022, the foundational field study represented a partnership between the marine institute and the Nekton Foundation. The expedition operated as the first systematic endeavour to survey the archipelago's deep ocean waters, gathering critical data on abyssal biodiversity and marine habitats. The event showcased the resulting published research alongside ongoing analytical work derived from the compiled dataset.

Presentations elucidated the expedition's operational planning, field execution, and specialised survey technologies, supplemented by short films documenting the offshore operations. Organisers detailed key scientific milestones, published academic papers, active analytical projects, and a comprehensive field guide cataloguing deep-sea biological taxa. Attendees were briefed on specimen identification efforts, encompassing analytical workshops established to classify the gathered biological samples and the preliminary findings emerging from those rigorous examinations.
