Maafushi Picnic Island opened for public use

The Maafushi Island Council has opened the Maafushi Picnic Island for public use.

The council revealed the newly reclaimed Maafushi Picnic Island, which has been officially renamed as Vammaafushi, has been opened for use by all locals between 0600hrs and 1800hrs every day. Tourists are allowed to visit the island from Sunday to Thursday. Permission to enter the picnic island can be sought from the designated contact numbers of the island council.

The land reclamation and shore protection project of Maafushi Picnic Island was carried out by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
Under the project, MTCC reclaimed 2 hectares of land in the lagoon of Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll and developed shore protection structures around the reclaimed island. The project was carried out to provide an island where the public could go on picnics and hold recreational activities.

The reclamation and shore protection of Maafushi Picnic Island was carried out at a cost of USD 700,000.
