Dharumavantha Hospital has announced a major healthcare milestone, with 27 babies successfully born through In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) since the facility's fertility services were officially launched in November 2024.
Operating under the hospital’s Fertility Center established at IGMH, the programme welcomed its first newborn in January of this year. According to hospital data, the center has achieved successful IVF outcomes for 35 patients over the past nine months. While treatments remain ongoing for eight patients, 27 families are already celebrating the arrival of their newborns.
The establishment of local fertility care fulfills a key presidential pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, aimed at easing the significant financial and psychological burdens traditionally faced by Maldivian families. Historically, individuals seeking advanced fertility treatments like IVF and IUI were forced to travel abroad, incurring heavy expenses. The domestic availability of these services has provided a vital lifeline for couples struggling with infertility, which is an increasingly prevalent issue in the country.
Beyond standard fertility treatments, the center has also extended fertility preservation services to cancer patients, ensuring they retain the opportunity to conceive following their medical treatments.
Building on this momentum, the government has announced ongoing efforts to further decentralise care by expanding fertility treatments to the atolls, marking a transformative step forward for the nation's healthcare sector.
