President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) is pursuing a policy of upholding Islam.
He made the statement while speaking at the closing ceremony of the PNC Congress 2026.
According to the President, all actions of the PNC are based on Islam and national identity. He said the government has worked towards these principles since taking office.
President Muizzu criticised governments led by parties other than the PNC, saying they had pursued destructive ideologies. He said it would be most beneficial to the country to move forward with PNC. He said the party would always side with the people, and run the country according to the people’s wishes.
The President further said the country’s future could be affected by decisions made by voters, noting that there have been past decisions that were not in the country’s best interests due to political ideologies. He said national interests must be prioritised in making decisions.
President Muizzu said political turmoil has contributed to the decline of traditional customs, including respect. He said attacks intended to discredit national leaders are contrary to Islam and Maldivian customs.
The President urged people to understand and compare the differences between the PNC and other political ideologies. He said PNC’s ideology is based on justice, fairness, sincerity, accountability and putting national interests first. He said people who put the country first should therefore support or cooperate with the government.
Speaking on the current administration’s reform efforts, the President said the government had started from scratch after inheriting a country in a difficult situation. He noted efforts to repay debt, protect political freedoms, strengthen justice, combat crime and corruption, improve governance, and strengthen defence and security.
