Maldives reaffirms commitment to working with China in the international arena

Maldives has reaffirmed commitment to continue working with China in the international arena on issues of mutual interest to the two countries.

The statement was made in a video message delivered by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives Abdulla Shahid, at the virtual reception held on September 28 by the Embassy of China in the Maldives to mark the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the assumption of office by Ambassador Wang Lixin on September 6, 2021.

In his message, Minister Shahid extended greetings and good wishes to President Xi Jinping, the government and the friendly people of China from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the people of the Maldives. Minister Shahid also congratulated Ambassador Wang Lixin on assuming her post as the new Ambassador of China to the Maldives.

Minister Shahid’s message stated that the bilateral relationship between the Maldives and China are founded on the Maldives’ commitment to the One China Policy, and the shared values and principles of equality and mutual respect. Minister Shahid expressed his gratitude for the support extended by the Government of China to the Maldives during the most challenging times of COVID-19 pandemic, by donating vaccines and other medical equipment to Maldives efforts to curb the virus. The minister reiterated that the Maldives will continue to work with China in the international arena on issues of mutual interest and looks forward to further strengthening the bilateral relationship that exist between two countries.

Minister Shahid concluded his message by stating that he looks forward to working closely with Ambassador Wang Lixin and he is confident that both countries can reach new heights in the China-Maldives bilateral relationship.
