Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has signed a contract with German company Fichtner to establish a hazardous waste and chemicals management system in the Greater Male' Region.
The contract was signed at a virtual ceremony by Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna and Executive Director of Fichtner Alexander Bohm. Under the agreement, Fichtner is tasked with completing a feasibility study for the establishment of the hazardous waste and chemicals management system within six months.
The project is being funded with financial assistance from the Global Environment Facility as part of the environment ministry's project titled 'Eliminating Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) through Sound Management of Chemicals'. The project to establish a hazardous waste and chemicals management system is expected to cost USD 104,000.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Shauna said public health, tourism, and the fishing industry depends on the environment and it is crucial to work towards its protection. She noted the establishment of a hazardous waste and chemicals management system will contribute to the protection of the environment.
