The Maldives is exploring opportunities to develop halal tourism as a distinct segment of its national tourism industry, following discussions between Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) and the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Development (ICCD).
VMC Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Abdulla Yasir met the Chamber’s Secretary-General, Sheikh Yousef Hasan Khalawi, to discuss the development of halal tourism products, services and experiences in the Maldives.
The discussions were held in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to establish halal tourism as a dedicated segment within the country’s tourism portfolio.
VMC said it has begun preliminary work to assess opportunities in the sector, including identifying resorts and hotels interested in offering halal-aligned experiences.
The initiative could include exploring certification pathways, specialised services and facilities, as well as international standards that could help the Maldives develop a competitive halal tourism offering.
“Developing halal tourism is one of the key priorities for Visit Maldives Corporation,” Yasir said, adding that the Maldives could build on its reputation for luxury and sustainable tourism to develop premium experiences for Muslim travellers.
Khalawi, who has experience in organising major halal-focused events internationally, shared insights on the sector and discussed how international expertise, industry engagement and knowledge exchange could support its development in the Maldives.
The two sides also discussed the possibility of introducing high-value halal-focused tourism events in the Maldives.
Halal tourism has been identified as an opportunity to diversify the country's tourism offering and attract growing demand from Muslim travellers seeking premium travel experiences tailored to their needs.
VMC said it would continue discussions with the tourism industry on suitable approaches to developing halal-aligned services and experiences, while assessing relevant certification requirements and international service standards.
VMC is also expected to explore further collaboration and knowledge-sharing opportunities as it works towards establishing halal tourism as a distinct segment of the Maldivian tourism industry.
