Shahid holds discussions on the functions of 76th UNGA

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has held discussions on the functions of the upcoming 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The foreign minister has been holding discussions with officials of member states of the United Nations after being elected the president of the 76th session of UNGA. Minister Shahid has met with over 35 permanent representatives to seek their views on the implementation of his presidency. As part of his efforts, Shahid has also met with Fatima K. Mohammed, the Representative of the African Union, which makes up 1/4th of the United Nations membership.

During the meeting, the representative congratulated Shahid for winning the presidency and exchanged the priorities of the African Union for the 76th session of the UNGA. Minister Shahid also held a joint meeting with Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Amina J. Mohammed and Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia Abdallah Y. al-Mouallimi
to exchange views and ideas on the next UNGA.

The Maldivian foreign minister won the presidency of the 76th session of the UNGA, at the elections held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on June 7, with 143 votes out of a total of 191 votes cast.
