Maldives calls for greater consideration for SIDS in plastic pollution treaty

The Maldives has called for greater consideration of the challenges faced by small island developing states (SIDS) at the 2nd Informal In-Person Meeting of Heads of Delegation of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on Plastic Pollution, being held in Bangkok.

The Maldives was represented by Legal Counsel Fazeela Ahmed Shaheem and Environmental Analyst Fathimath Shamra.

According to the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, the Maldives highlighted the disproportionate and transboundary impacts of plastic pollution on SIDS and called for the special circumstances and vulnerabilities of SIDS to be meaningfully reflected and operationalised in the final treaty text.

The meeting focused on conceptual discussions on various provisions of the treaty, with countries working towards convergence to finalise the treaty in the upcoming fourth part of the fifth session of the INC in March 2027.
