Muizzu was summoned in relation to an ongoing investigation: ACC

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has stated former Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was summoned to the commission in relation to an ongoing investigation against him, that is being carried out in accordance to the standard policies of the commission.

Muizzu was summoned to ACC for questioning on March 23 in relation to a corruption investigation launched against him. Speaking to the press after being summoned to ACC, Muizzu said he believes he was summoned as part of a political agenda to damage his credibility ahead of the upcoming local council election. He is Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s candidate for the position of Male’ City Mayor in the upcoming election.

However, in a statement released on March 24, ACC denied claims that the investigation was launched specifically to hinder Muizzu’s chances at the upcoming election. ACC stated Muizzu’s investigation had been placed on the agenda as per the standard policies of the commission, adding the commission does not schedule its investigations in accordance to any political agenda. ACC said the commission never reveals the reason behind summoning any particular individual, and had followed this policy when Muizzu was summoned on March 23.

ACC strongly rebuffed claims that it had been ordered by a certain person to launch an investigation against Muizzu, stating such claims are spread to create a wrong perception of the commission. ACC said it will continue to carry out its responsibilities as stated by law, despite such attacks against the commission.
