EPA fines Fenaka for commencing a project without EIA

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fined Fenaka Corporation Limited for commencing an infrastructure project without preparing the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report.

EPA revealed Fenaka was fined for commencing the construction of a powerhouse in Nadella, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll without preparing the relevant EIA. EPA noted Fenaka has also admitted it did not seek the required permits from EPA before commencing the project. The agency revealed Fenaka has been fined USD 17,000, which must be paid within 30 days.

Fenaka has been fined multiple times in the past for commencing projects without seeking the required permits. As such, this is the sixth time the state utilities company has been fined by EPA in the past 8 years.

The powerhouse project in Nadella involves relocation of the current powerhouse away from the residential areas of the island. Fenaka revealed 45% of the project has now been completed.
