President checks on Ex-President Waheed following verbal abuse incident

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has checked up on former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik following an incident involving verbal abuse and harassment of the former president and his spouse, Ilham Hussain.

President Solih held a telephone conversation with former President Waheed, after it was revealed an individual had verbally attacked and harassed the former president and his spouse while they were out for their morning exercise on June 14. The former president thanked President Solih for calling and checking on him and his family following the incident.

The office of former President Waheed released a statement, noting the former president and his spouse were stalked and verbally attacked by an individual while they were out for their morning exercise. The statement said the incident was immediately reported to the police.

The statement further read there was no physical assault involved although the individual was within arm's reach of former President Waheed and his spouse. However, the statement read the prolonged attack represents both verbal and physical intimidation, harassment and abuse, adding the use of vulgar and obscene language was deplorable. Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed an investigation has been launched into the incident.

Waheed served as the President of the Maldives from February 7, 2012, to November 17, 2013.
