All legal guardianship cases have been submitted to Family Court: AG Office

Attorney General (AG)’s Office has revealed all cases involving the legal guardianship of children brought under state care have been submitted to the Family Court of Maldives.

A statement by the AG Office said 11 cases requesting the legal guardianship of a child to be transferred upon the state was submitted to the Family Court of Maldives today, completing the submission of all such cases. AG Office said an additional 18 cases involving children aged between 6 months and 13 years, who have brought under the care of the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services, are currently being processed by the Family Court.

AG Office stated the parents and family of the 11 children whose legal guardianship cases were taken up to court today, have refused to take up guardianship of the children. AG Office added parents of the majority of these children are drug addicts.

Article 35 of the Constitution of Maldives mandates the state to provide protection and assistance to children who have been neglected by their families.
