An art exhibition has been opened in the capital Male’ to mark the World Whistleblowers Day.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was graced by Enrico Boninsenya, Head of Maldives Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

The Whistleblower Protection Unit's new logo was launched at the opening ceremony of the exhibition held at the Art Gallery to mark Whistleblowers' Day.

Around 70 submissions were received to the competition to design the new logo. The logo designed by Ahmed Nabih received the highest marks from the judges. Nabih shared an introduction to the logo through a special video.

The exhibition features a dozen artworks highlighting whistleblowing. The paintings are open to the public for purchase and will continue until 10:00 pm on Tuesday.

The Whistleblower Protection Unit Director General Mariyam Rifna Letheef, Assistant Director Fathimath Masha, Transparency Maldives Executive Director Asiyath Rizweena and UNODC Head of Maldives Office Enrico Boninsenya all addressed the gathering during the opening ceremony.

The whistleblower system has been introduced to minimise the damage caused to the state by corruption and to prevent corrupt practices. However, the system is hardly utilised, despite legal protection assured under the Whistleblower Protection Act.

According to the Act, whistleblowing is the act of submitting information to the relevant authorities that an unlawful act has been committed or is being committed or may be committed by a state agency or individual.

Every year, 23 June is celebrated as World Whistleblowers' Day. The day is celebrated to recognise whistleblowers who report misconduct in the workplace.
