President meets members of Maakurathu Council

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has met with council members from Maakurathu Island Council of North Maalhosmadulu Atoll. The meeting was held at the President’s office this afternoon.

During the meeting, discussions were focused on the developmental plans for Maakurathu and challenges faced by its residents. In this regard, the councilors emphasised on the Islands’ electricity shortage issue, concerns regarding the ongoing work of the islands’ sanitation system and the need for a proper waste management system.

The councilors also shared details regarding the need for clean water distribution channels to be established for the Island's households, requirements for harbour expansion and renovation, need for a new and more serviceable mosque, requests for a football stadium for the island's youth and the need for developing more economic opportunities in the Island. They also highlighted the concerns of growing crime rates on the island and the urgent need for police stations to ensure community safety and crime control.

President Solih shared updates of some projects proposed for development on the Island and noted that a bulk of the issues highlighted during the meeting would be resolved with the provisions of State Budget 2020. The president also affirmed the administration would take necessary actions after consulting with relevant ministries to address the specific concerns and issues raised by the Maakurathu Council.
