Sixty prisoners granted clemency during first year of government

Clemency Board has revealed 60 prisoners were granted clemency during the first year of the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

According to the statistics of Clemency Board published by the Attorney General's Office, 60 prisoners were granted clemency during the first year of the current administration while 49 others were rejected clemency during this period.

The clemency statistics were published after Parliament of Maldives decided to amend the Parole Act in order to establish a better system of parole. Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed said he had received 12 letters regarding prisoners, requesting for clemency or parole. He said the report issued by the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Gender revealed over 200 prisoners who are eligible for parole are still detained.

The Clemency Board, which is constituted in accordance to the Clemency Act, is chaired by the attorney general. According to the act, all administrative assistance required for the Clemency Board is provided by the Attorney General's Office.
