Parliament approves dismissal motion of Justice Ghani

Parliament of Maldives has approved the dismissal motion of Supreme Court Justice Abdul Ghani Mohamed. The dismissal motion against Ghani was approved with votes from 64 members present at the sitting today.

Judicial Services Commission (JSC) submitted a dismissal motion against Ghani stating he does not fulfill the criteria for a Supreme Court judge. The Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary reviewed the motion by JSC and forwarded the report to the parliament on November 27.

JSC initiated the dismissal motion after reviewing allegations of misconduct against Ghani. He was found to have violated the constitution in allowing the Supreme Court to usurp the authorities of the parliament and JSC.

In addition, Ghani was found guilty of issuing a ruling that violated the constitutional rights of 12 parliamentarians. He was also found guilty of unlawfully dissolving the Judicial Council and taking over the authorities and responsibilities of the council.

Ghani was appointed to the Supreme Court on June 28, 2018. Before his appointment to the apex court, he had served as a judge at High Court of Maldives and as a member of JSC.
