Parliament approves names of three nominees for BroadCom

Parliament of Maldives has approved the names of three nominees for Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom).
Members of the parliament voted to approve the names of Ali Yousuf, Mariyam Waheeda and Ahmed Qais to be appointed to BroadCom.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had sent the names of 42 nominees to the parliament to be selected for approval. 36 names were initially nominated after two seats of BroadCom became vacant following the resignation of Ismail Safwan and Hassan Nabah.

President Solih nominated another four individuals to the commission when former president of BroadCom Mohamed Shaheeb resigned from the commission. Three more nominations were submitted to the parliament after the parliament voted to dismiss former Vice President of BroadCom Fathimath Zaina.

The names submitted to replace Zaina had been discussed by the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions, after which the committee decided not to endorse any of the names. The report by the committee was approved during the parliament session today.
