Judge Ghanee's dismissal motion forwarded to Judiciary Committee

Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has forwarded the dismissal motion of Supreme Court Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohamed to Parliamentary Committee on Judiciary for review.

The report will be forwarded to the parliament floor after the committee reviews the report to see if it adheres to the dismissal procedures. His dismissal motion was forwarded to the parliament last week, while JSC did not reveal the reason for his dismissal.

Justice Ghanee was elected to the apex court on June 28, last year. He has previously worked in High Court and served at JSC as a member.

If the parliament approves the dismissal of Ghanee, he will be the third Judge from the Supreme Court bench to be removed through impeachment motions, following the dismissal of Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi and Justice Adam Mohamed. Another judge on the bench, Justice Abdulla Areef retired due to ill health.

Supreme Court Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir has been tasked with running the top court following retirement of Justice Abdulla Areef.
