Criminal Court of Maldives has sentenced the captain and the chief engineer of the tugboat former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb used to flee Maldives last July.
The Criminal Court sentenced the two Indonesian citizens to be jailed for 3 months and 18 days after they pleaded guilty to the charges. The Prosecutor General’s Office of Maldives charged them for obstructing justice by aiding a suspect to flee. They received a lowered sentence for pleading guilty to the charges.
On September 18, former Vice President Adeeb was also sentenced for 3 months and 18 days of imprisonment over his attempt to flee Maldives.
The Supreme Court of Maldives had issued an order putting travel restrictions on Adeeb who then remained under house arrest before he tried to escape to India on a tugboat.
The former vice president was apprehended when he arrived in Thoothukudi, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on August 1. He left Maldives on a tugboat named Virgo 9 on July 27.
