Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has said the parliament shall continue drafting the bills from the government as it has no legal obstacle in carrying the task via a parliamentary committee. His remarks come at a time when the top offices of the executive power including ministers have a dispute over a parliament committee drafting bills of the government. Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath earlier remarked that a parliament with integrity would allow the government to submit the bills it requires in order to fulfil its pledges.
Speaking to commence the sitting on Monday, Speaker Nasheed said the parliament is mandated with the responsibility of making all laws according to the constitution and the rights granted include law making, law amendments and making laws obsolete. Nasheed further said all bills it drafts shall be drafted in consultation with government institutions, independent commissions and other relevant authorities. He also remarked the Attorney General’s Office has the authority to submit the bills it requires.
Regarding the disputes that have emerged between the executive and the parliament, President’s Office explained President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has not requested the parliament to draft bills included in the legislative agenda of the administration.
