Parliament removes Ibrahim Rasheed from Thinadhoo Magistrate Court

Parliament of Maldives has voted to remove Ibrahim Rasheed as the magistrate from Thinadhoo Magistrate Court. The decision was made with 70 parliamentarians voting in favour of the motion.

Two-third votes will be required to pass a no confidence vote on a judge, according to the constitution. This was the first time the parliament voted to dismiss a judge.

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) forwarded a proposal to the parliament to dismiss Magistrate Ibrahim Rasheed.

Ibrahim Rasheed was on suspension since May 30, 2016. He was suspended after he was arrested by Maldives Police Service over a drug case in March 2016.
