Government launches a free ferry service for surfers

Government of Maldives has launched a free ferry service for surfers, linking Male' city with the surfing island, Thanburudhoo in Kaafu Atoll.
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ministry of Tourism of Maldives, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Maldives Body Boarding Association (MBBA) and Maldives Surfing Association (MSA) to begin the service. The memorandum was signed by the Deputy Minister at Ministry of Tourism Hussain Lirar, CEO of MTCC Ibrahim Ziyath, President of MBBA Abdulla Areef and Hassan Rakhee of MSA at a ceremony held at tourism ministry.
The agreement will be a golden opportunity for surfers and under the agreement, surfers will also be able to go to surfing spots of Thulusdhoo in Kaafu Atoll, deputy minister Husain Lirar said speaking at the ceremony.
Thanburudhoo, which is home to the world famous waves Sultans and Honkeys, is currently the only surfing spot in the central region. Construction of the bridge to link Male' city with the airport island of Hulhule has led to the closing of popular surfing spot of Raalhugandu.
MTCC will provide ferry service for surfers free of charge and it will provide the opportunity will ease the challenges faced by surfers of Maldives, according to CEO Ibrahim Ziyath.
Surfing has become a popular sport, especially in the tourism industry of the Maldives, with resorts and tour operators organising surfing charters to allow guests to experience the many different waves and breaks in the island nation.
