President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the official discussions between the Maldives and Malaysia as a strong foundation laid for the future of both countries.
President Dr Muizzu made the remarks in a social media post thanking Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim following his State Visit to the Maldives from 14 to 15 September at the President's invitation.
In a separate social media message, Prime Minister Anwar said he met President Dr Muizzu during the visit and discussed matters of mutual interest to both countries. He also expressed hope that the friendly and brotherly ties between the Maldives and Malaysia would continue to strengthen for the benefit of their peoples.
Responding to Prime Minister Anwar's message, President Dr Muizzu said the official discussions held during the historic visit had laid a strong foundation for the future of both countries. He said the Maldives and Malaysia could continue working together in trade, investment, education, healthcare, tourism, sustainable development, Islamic affairs and defence.
President Dr Muizzu also expressed gratitude for the decision to provide the Maldives with a USD 100 million currency swap facility through the central banks of the two countries. He said the decision to begin discussions on establishing a trade agreement would further strengthen economic ties and create new opportunities for the people and businesses of both countries.

The President also thanked Prime Minister Anwar for the message he sent to the congress of the People's National Congress (PNC), the governing party.
President Dr Muizzu said Prime Minister Anwar's visit had opened a new chapter in the friendly relations between the Maldives and Malaysia. He expressed confidence that the brotherly ties between the two countries would reach new heights and prayed for relations to continue strengthening in the future.
