Maldives Police Service (MPS) has signed agreements with two companies in a bid to further enhance its operations and expand its services across the nation.
A special signing ceremony was held at the MPS headquarters in Shaheed Hussain Adam Building. On behalf of MPS, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Farhad Fikree signed the agreements.
The first agreement signed was for the establishment of a police accommodation block in Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alif Atoll. The contract was awarded to Fedo Pvt Ltd. On behalf of Fedo, the company’s director, Ali Wasiu signed the agreement. The second agreement signed was for the establishment of a police station in Maduvvari, Meemu atoll. The contract was awarded to Mims Construction Pvt Ltd. On behalf of Mims, the company’s Managing Director, Saudullah Hilmy signed the agreement.
These projects are part of MPS’s efforts to improve the quality of its service and improve the living conditions of police officers serving in various atolls across the nation.
When the current administration took over, 66 islands did not have any police presence in them. As such, when police assistance is required on these islands, a team had to be sent from a nearby island. As such, in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to ensure security to all local communities, police presence is being expanded across all inhabited islands.
Furthermore, when the government took office, only 17 islands had their own police buildings. The remaining islands were being served by buildings provided by the council or through rented buildings. These circumstances created many issues for MPS in fulfilling its duty to the citizens. To address this, the government has undertaken a nationwide initiative, with police infrastructure developments projects being carried out in various phases across 60 islands of Maldives. As such, the government has opened the possibility for local communities across the nation to access police services without the need to wait for a team deployment from a nearby island.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has charted an ambitious path, with the aim of establishing police infrastructure in all inhabited islands and providing its services to residents.
