A special task force has commenced its operations to address the backlog of cases in Maldives’ court systems spanning over a year.
The task force established by Chief Justice of the Maldives Abdul Ghanee Mohamed comprises of nine members representing various courts.
According to a statement from the Supreme Court of Maldives, currently 13,032 backlogged cases in record across various courts spanning a duration of over a year. The statement divulged that as such a special task force has been established to address and close these cases with the highest priority. The task force’s work has commenced from today onwards, the Supreme Court said.
The Supreme Court provided further details regarding the task force by saying that the task will give special attention to addressing the administrative issues that have halted the proceedings of these cases.
During the inauguration of the Judicial Year 2026, the Chief Justice reiterated this initiative by stating that the highest priority will be given to resolving the backlog of cases. Thanking the government’s efforts to make judiciary function independently, he revealed that many efforts are being undertaken to strengthen the judiciary.
Despite the many challenges and bureaucratic blocks faced by judges and court employees, the Chief Justice acknowledged the tireless efforts made by them. He further stated that the work to address the backlog will be carried out concurrently with the 21,000 cases estimated for this year.
The chief Justice said that the aim is by the end of this year to clear the entire backlog and ensure the smooth and robust functioning of the Judiciary.
