Gov’t Tasks MTCC, RDC to Drive Nationwide Push to Expand Sports, Fitness Infrastructure

The government has initiated a major national push to expand sports infrastructure, awarding significant contracts to state-owned enterprises focused on developing fitness facilities across dozens of islands.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) emerged as the primary contractor, securing the contracts to undertake 20 sports-related projects spanning 18 different islands nationwide.

The contracts were formally executed on Sunday during a signing ceremony held at the Ministry of Sports, Fitness and Recretation with the Minister Abdulla Rafiu signing the agreement on behalf of the government, while MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee formalised the commitment for the state-owned firm with several lawmakers in attendance.

The extensive scope of the MTCC projects covers a diverse range of facilities designed to promote both team sports and community fitness. Key constructions include the development of a running track and volleyball court in Fensuhi, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, and the establishment of new futsal courts in Muraidhoo, Dhidhdhoo, and Molhadhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll. The initiative also places a strong emphasis on public health, with numerous outdoor gym projects slated for development in locations such as Kinolhas in Raa Atoll, and across three villages in Thaa Atoll, including Guraidhoo, Vilufushi, Madifushi and Buruni.

In tandem with the large-scale MTCC commitment, the Road Development Corporation (RDC) was awarded contracts for four essential sports infrastructure projects. RDC, represented by Managing Director Ibrahim Nazeem, will focus heavily on facility upgrades, including the critical task of installing lighting systems and rostrums at the Mahibadhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, and Thoddoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll football stadiums, alongside developing an outdoor volleyball court in Kondey, Gaafu Alifu Atoll.

These widespread construction efforts are central to the government's current policy aimed at revamping sports infrsatructure and promoting a healthy lifestyle in the community. By massively investing in outdoor gyms, fitness centres, stadiums, and courts across all corners of the archipelago, the government seeks to rapidly establish accessible sporting facilities in every inhabited island.
