MWSC Begins Testing Water Network Connecting Male’ and Hulhumale’

The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has commenced testing the water network established to circulate fresh water between Male’ and Hulhumale’.

The pipeline, which was integrated into the Sinamale’ Bridge connecting Male’ and Hulhumale’ was intended to circulate fresh water between Male’ and Hulhumale’. However, the actual water connection was not established over the last five years. After President Dr Mohamed Muizzu was elected to office in 2023, he resumed efforts to complete the work. According to MWSC, the project is now nearing completion.

MWSC’s Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed confirmed that the pipeline used to set up the water network has now been cleaned and connected at both ends. While interim testing is ongoing, the network can circulate 3,000-tonnes of water at its current capacity, he said. Once all the project is fully completed, 20,000-tonnes of water can be circulated between Male’ and Hulhumale’, he added.

MWSC aims to bring the water network into service by mid-year. Matheen said the project still requires the establishment of a pump station, and upgrades to the electricity network of the station.

The purpose of the water network between Male’ and Hulhumale’ is to ensure water security in the Male’ area. With the network, if there is any interruption to water supply in Male’ or Hulhumale’, water can be early transferred from one island to the other.
