Government on Saturday awarded the contracts to build mosques in a dozen islands along with a Centre for Holy Quran in another two.
The contracts were signed with state-owned firms, Fenaka Corporation and Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
This marks the start of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s presidential pledge to build new mosques in 35 islands across the Maldives.
The mosques will be built in 11 islands in addition to the Islamic Center in Foakaidhoo, Shaviyani Atoll. The contracts to build Quran Centers in Maabaidhoo, Laamu Atoll and Olhuvelifushi, Lhaviyani Atoll were also awarded on Saturday.
Fenaka was awarded the contract to build the Fokaidhoo Islamic centre, the two Quran centers and mosques in eight other islands. The agreement was signed by the Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed while Managing Director Mohamed Najah signed the agreement on behalf of Fenaka.
The contract to build three mosques awarded to MTCC was signed by its Managing Director Ahmed Saeed.
According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the mosques will be completed within two years equipped with space for Quran classes.
The Quran centers will be equipped with three class rooms, a library and a conference hall, it said.
