Maldives-Japan Explores Renewable Energy Opportunities

Government has held discussions with a visiting top-level delegation from Japan over enhancing renewable energy and low emission development opportunities in the island nation.

Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim met with the high-level delegation led by Asakura Takekazu.

Discussions centred on progressing renewable energy and low emission development opportunities through Japanese aid and investments, the Ministry said.

During the meeting, Minister Thoriq expressed his willingness to further strengthen relations between the two countries. The Japanese delegation also expressed its interest in assisting Maldives in achieving its renewable energy and low emission targets.

The current Administration has set sights on converting 33 percent of the country’s electricity usage to renewable energy by 2028. Under this initiative, the country added 17 Megawatts of renewable energy last year which has taken the total renewable energy capacity from 53 to 70 Megawatts.
