16 Maldivians awarded Australia Awards Scholarships for 2025

Sixteen Maldivians have been awarded Australia Awards scholarship. The recipients will commence their studies in Australia in 2025, pursuing master’s degrees in critical fields such as finance and economics, social work, criminal law, public health, and gender in development.

High Commissioner David Jessup hosted a reception to honour and farewell the new scholars. National Security Advisor and prominent Australian alumnus, Ibrahim Latheef, attended as Chief Guest, alongside more than 100 members of the Maldives-Australia Alumni community. Australia’s Children’s Commissioner Anne Hollonds and three Australian students currently studying in the Maldives under the New Colombo Plan were also present.

The 16 scholarships awarded this year represent an increase from the 12 awarded in 2023 and eight in 2022, reflecting a growing commitment to fostering educational ties between the two nations.

Since the 1960s, over 700 Maldivians have benefitted from Australian scholarships, including the Australia Awards, making Australia a preferred destination for tertiary education among Maldivians.

During the reception, the strengthening collaboration between Maldivian and Australian academic institutions was also highlighted. A memorandum of understanding on research cooperation was signed earlier that day between the Maldives National University and the University of Melbourne.

The Australia Awards programme continues to empower Maldivian professionals to address key challenges and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
