The practical works of the project to establish a water and sewerage system in Nellaidhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll have been completed. The newly installed system was successfully tested and commissioned on 11 August, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development announced. Technical staff from the ministry, alongside the contractor, Fenaka Corporation and the Nellaidhoo Council, actively participated in these final operations, officials noted.
Funding for the public works initiative was secured through a loan from the OPEC Fund for International Development alongside state budget allocations. Execution of the contract was carried out by a joint venture consisting of Altec Maldives Private Limited and Rasheed Carpentry and Construction Private Limited.
To deliver high-quality utility service, the project established a Reverse Osmosis plant building featuring administrative offices and a laboratory equipped with water-testing instruments. A 21-kilowatt solar panel array was installed on the building for eco-friendly operation. Drinking water infrastructure includes two drilled boreholes, two Reverse Osmosis plants producing 35 tonnes of fresh water daily, two 200-tonne drinking water storage tanks, and a 200-tonne rainwater tank.
Distribution is supported by an 8.8-kilometre water piping network and a 7.5-kilometre sewerage network, integrated with two pumping stations and a sewage treatment plant. Construction of a sea outfall, installation of catchpits across buildings, and water meter connections have been completed. The next phase will transfer the system to a designated operator to commence official service, the ministry stated.
