STELCO states electricity bills are not only increasing in Maldives

Managing Director of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) Hussain Fahmy has revealed that the primary cause of increasing electricity bills were due to the exponential rate of global warming.

Speaking in response to the concerns raised by the public, Fahmy explained that the electricity bills were raising following the increasing consumption of electricity to cope with the adverse effects of the sweltering heat waves. Noting that this is a major global issue, Fahmy disclosed that STELCO had provided a Ramadan discount of USD 1.3 million to the bills. Additionally, the Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation Limited Muaz Mohamed Rasheed stated that here were no issues on the readings taken following the month of Ramadan.

Furthermore, Fahmy highlighted some important measures to be implemented aiming to reduce the electricity consumption despite the impacts of climate change. As such, minimising the usage of electricity and awareness campaigns can be conducted. Meanwhile, Muaz revealed that efforts are underway to install smart meters which would assist to minimise electricity consumption.
