Broadcom mandates licenses for commercial rebroadcasting

The Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) has announced an amendment to the Rebroadcast Regulation, making it mandatory to obtain a license for commercial rebroadcasting, excluding personal use. It marks the second amendment to the regulation since its inception in 2022.

The revised regulation specifically addresses unlicensed rebroadcasting service providers in islands, cities, hotels, restaurants, and resorts using platforms such as Airtel, DishTV, or other means for commercial purposes. Individuals engaging in commercial rebroadcasting without the necessary channel rights will face fines. The introduction of licensing aims to curb unauthorised commercial rebroadcasting services.

Furthermore, the amendment stipulates that applications for license renewal must be submitted 90 days before the expiration date and no renewals will be accepted beyond that period. The amendment also outlines penalties for individuals failing to pay the annual broadcasting fee.
