President vows to win support for presidential system

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has vowed to win public support to retain the presidential system in case a referendum is held to change the system of government. He made the remark at a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Council meeting on the resolution passed by the Parliament to hold a referendum on changing governance.

During the meeting, President Solih said that he fully supports the presidential system and that he will begin work to retain the current system of government if a referendum is scheduled. He explained that both the parliamentary system and the presidential system have flaws but that the presidential system is the most optimal form of government for the Maldives.

Additionally, President Solih said that MDP should shift to acting as a responsible opposition party after the transition of government. He said that the party is used to suffering defeats and playing a vital role as the opposition. He also highlighted the importance of winning seats in the 2024 parliamentary election and focusing on winning the 2028 presidential election.

Furthermore, President Solih thanked his supporters and everyone who campaigned for him in the presidential election. He also urged the national council to help get party members elected in upcoming elections.
