Gov't to digitise marine vessel licenses, ending paper cards

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has decided to digitise marine vessel licenses, replacing the current book and laminated card system.

Director at the Transport Ministry Hussain Nazeer announced the transition, mirroring the process for regular driving permits, with digital licenses to undergo testing in the next three months.

Additionally, Nazeer said that the license structure, categories, and fees will change as part of this digitalisation effort. He also said the current fee of USD1.6 will increase to USD16 for converting to a digital license, ensuring its security similar to a road vehicle driving license.

Furthermore, Nazeer said that new categories for high-speed vehicles and license upgrades for the elderly will be introduced. He said these licenses will be granted after completing relevant courses and passing driving examinations.

The transport ministry aims to make digital licenses available across all the islands in the Maldives. A new law imposes a fine of USD648 for using an invalid license, with violators facing license suspension for 48hrs or up to one month, depending on the severity of the driving regulation violations.
