The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has once again extended the medical leave for former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor.
Former Vice President Adeeb initially arrived in Singapore on July 12 to undergo medical tests that could not be conducted in the Maldives, as confirmed by MCS. His initial 10-day medical treatment period was set to conclude on July 22 but was subsequently extended by MCS until August 28. Following the extension, the deadline was once again extended until September 15.
As the most recent deadline has expired, Adeeb requested an additional extension, which MCS granted by extending the medical leave to October 1. The correctional service clarified that it has the authority to grant extensions to the medical leave of prisoners if they are unable to receive the proper treatment during the given time frame.
Adeeb's party, the Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD), stated that he left for Singapore for treatment of a life-threatening neurological disease based on the recommendations of multiple doctors at different hospitals. Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison in October 2020, in connection to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement and money laundering scandal. However, he was transferred to house arrest due to his ill health.
