The Maldives and the United States of America (USA) have expressed hopes for strengthening bilateral ties across all areas of mutual interest. The discussions took place during a meeting held after the first Resident Ambassador of the USA to the Maldives Hugo Hue-Ho Yon presented his Letter of Credence to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Following the ceremony, Ambassador Yon paid a brief introductory call to President Solih, who extended his congratulations on the commencement of Ambassador Yon's term. President Solih emphasised that Ambassador Yon's appointment and the establishment of a USA embassy signify an expansion of the partnership between the Maldives and the USA.
Additionally, President Solih noted that the reopening of the Maldives Embassy in Washington, D.C. was a momentous occasion for the Maldives, symbolising a pivotal advancement in foreign policy. He further stated that the embassy will open doors to strengthening relations across various avenues, including people-to-people contact, economic and trade partnerships, and cultural exchanges.
Furthermore, Ambassador Yon expressed his eagerness to build upon the fruitful bilateral relations between the USA and the Maldives. He also commended the efforts of the Maldives in addressing climate change impacts and building resilience.
