Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the presidential candidate of the People's National Congress (PNC), has stated that economic growth depends on increasing foreign investments.
During the presidential debate, Muizzu criticised the current economic situation and said that the government should not take funds from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) to manage its recurrent expenditure and revive the economy. As such, he said that he would end the practice of printing money to manage debt if he were elected president.
Additionally, Muizzu highlighted the increase in the price of products and pledged to reduce prices as well as maintain the USD exchange rate. He also said that he would not introduce new taxes and instead increase revenue by increasing the number of tax paying businesses. As such, he pledged to develop the fisheries and tourism industries, build airports, and expedite the development of unfinished resorts.
Speaking on his foreign policy, Muizzu said that he would maintain diplomatic relations with all countries, in accordance with the law. He also said that he would stop foreign military personnel from being stationed in the country and review the Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) Harbour Development Project and terminate the agreement if it is unfavourable to the Maldives.
Furthermore, Muizzu assured that he would commence the major housing projects in his manifesto using foreign investments. He said that the Fushi Dhiggaru reclamation project can be completed within a year.
