ECM allows voters to re-register to locations with polling stations

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has provided the opportunity for voters to re-register to locations with polling stations.

ECM stated that ballot boxes will be stationed in resorts, industrial sites, and abroad. Since ECM decided to not place ballot boxes in some locations due to the registered voter count being below the required number, it has opened the opportunity for voters in those locations to re-register from August 13-14.

Speaking at a press conference, Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb said that the number of ballot boxes has been reduced to 580 from the earlier number of 609. He, however, said the number of ballot boxes will be determined after excluding previous locations where ballot boxes have been placed. He also said that individuals that have registered to those locations should re-register elsewhere.

ECM stated that ballot boxes will be placed in 18 resorts, Thilafushi and four other countries. The electoral body stated that ballot boxes will not be set up in New Delhi in India, Tokyo in Japan Singapore, and Thailand.

ECM stated that forms can be submitted to Dharubaaruge' convention centre, the main headquarters of ECM, or focal points in the atolls. The electoral body introduced online re-registration to enhance convenience and accessibility and facilitate an easier registration process for the general public. ECM stated that individuals who re-registered to vote in the 2020 local council elections will not need to go through the re-registration process again for the upcoming presidential election.

The presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 9 and a possible second round will be held on September 30. The eligible voting population for the presidential election is 282,672 voters and ECM has established its main headquarters for the election at Dharubaaruge' convention centre.
